Many mothers experience barriers to maintaining a breastfeeding relationship with their infants after returning to work. This review examines twenty-two articles in ten countries to look at employer policies in both public and private sectors that support continued breastfeeding. The most common employer-driven support for mothers was to provide a lactation space, followed by breastfeeding breaks and comprehensive lactation support programmes. Findings from the review suggest that employers are in a unique position to support continued breastfeeding, and that there are policies and practices that can be implemented regardless of the employer's size, budget or resources. This article has restricted access but does provide a useful synopsis of what works and recommendations for further action.
