Dietary Guidelines for Americans set the country’s nutrition policy and help direct over $80 billion federal spending. Despite this influence, it is unclear how environmentally sustainable the guidelines are. This paper models three styles of diets contained in the guidelines against their environmental impacts. Unsurprisingly, the results show high levels of depletion to our climate and to natural resources. The paper does not particularly address public private collaboration, yet the findings are relevant to the future of sustainable consumption and production. The paper, or at least its findings, are worth a read.
