This study evaluates microbial contamination in fresh vegetables sold in traditional markets in Hawassa, Ethiopia. The research finds that 35% of vegetable samples tested positive for E. coli, while 7% were contaminated with Salmonella. The risk of contracting foodborne illnesses from consuming raw vegetables is significant, particularly for lettuce. The findings highlight the need for improved food handling, sanitation, and regulatory oversight to enhance food safety in traditional markets.
