This peer-reviewed study investigates the relationship between water, sanitation, hygiene (WASH) and nutrition in three Indian states. It finds strong links between poor WASH practices—such as open defecation and menstrual hygiene—and stunting, thinness, and low MUAC among adolescent girls. It calls for integrated actions involving hygiene access, poverty alleviation, and youth participation.
