This report presents the workforce nutrition programme implemented in Kericho County, Kenya between January 2020 and December 2022 by GAIN and the Ethical Tea Partnership. The programme aimed to improve the diets of tea workers by promoting nutritious food consumption, fortification, and biofortified crops.
Key findings:
136,025 individuals reached, including 27,205 workers directly impacted.
Awareness of fortified foods increased from 61.4% to 76.6%.
Kitchen gardening adoption doubled, with orange-fleshed sweet potato cultivation rising from 24% to 48%.
Women’s dietary diversity improved, with those meeting the minimum diversity requirement increasing from 22% to 32%.
Nutrition education through radio, training, and vendor engagement played a key role in behavior change.
The project demonstrated the effectiveness of workforce nutrition programs in agricultural settings, with potential scalability for other industries.
