This study explores the role of nutritional status in reducing COVID-19 mortality among older adults in Kerala, India. Despite having the highest proportion of elderly citizens, Kerala achieved a low COVID-19 fatality rate during the first wave due to robust health measures and nutritional interventions.

Key Findings:

Good nutrition significantly reduced all-cause mortality and improved immune response among older individuals.
Kerala's food security schemes such as essential grocery kits and community kitchens helped build immunity among high-risk groups.
Overweight or obesity increased the risk of comorbidities, but overall good nutrition mitigated severe COVID-19 outcomes.
Kerala’s early diagnosis, reverse quarantine strategy, and strong public health engagement played a key role in controlling fatalities.
The study highlights the crucial role of nutrition in pandemic response and calls for further research into nutritional policies for elderly care.
