This UNIDO/WUR/WPO position paper outlines the FLW–packaging sustainability paradox: packaging (often plastic) prevents spoilage and extends shelf life, yet poses end‑of‑life and climate burdens. It presents Save Food Packaging Design Guidelines (contain/protect; preserve/extend shelf life; communicate handling; balance food vs packaging waste) and stresses life‑cycle assessment, regional FLW hotspots, and PPPs. Case studies include copper‑based antimicrobial films (Chile), hermetic maize storage (Kenya), temperature‑monitoring systems (Australia), recyclable egg cartons (China), and active packaging for prawns (Sri Lanka). Implication: evidence‑based design and harmonized standards can optimize packaging to meaningfully cut FLW while advancing circularity and SDG 12.3. [149+ source]
