This GAIN working paper investigates how packaging innovations can improve affordability and accessibility of nutritious foods in low- and middle-income countries. The study explores three key solutions: single-serve packaging, reusable packaging, and bulk sales without individual packaging. It assesses the cost, environmental impact, food safety, and logistical feasibility of each solution based on case studies and interviews in Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, and Bangladesh. Bulk sales emerged as the most cost-effective and environmentally sustainable, while reusable packaging showed promise for long-term affordability. The paper calls for more investment in research and localized innovation to scale effective packaging strategies that reduce costs without compromising safety or quality.
