This systematic review synthesizes international studies on the impact of school nutrition policies on food availability in primary schools. Analyzing 18 studies, the review finds that most policies increased the availability of healthier foods while reducing unhealthy options. However, findings on socioeconomic disparities are mixed, with some studies showing positive equity impacts and others reporting financial barriers to healthier food implementation.
The review recommends better enforcement of school nutrition policies, adequate funding, and evaluations based on socioeconomic position (SEP) to ensure nutrition equity in schools.
