This report highlights the impact of the Healthy Diets for Tea Communities programme in Malawi, focusing on tea estate workers and smallholder farmers from 2020 to 2023. The initiative aimed to enhance food security, dietary diversity, and hygiene practices.
Key achievements:
147,780 people reached, including 29,556 farmers and estate workers directly.
72% of smallholder farmers recognized the benefits of biofortified crops (up from 36% at baseline).
11% increase in consumption of nutrient-rich vegetables, including vitamin A-rich sweet potatoes.
100% of smallholder farmers were aware of fortified foods (up from 74%).
5,151 ‘tip taps’ for handwashing were built, improving hygiene in farming communities.
The programme had a sustained impact, with tea estates continuing to provide fortified lunches and long-term government engagement in workforce nutrition.
