This study, led by Brittany Kovacs and colleagues, explores the carbon footprints of dietary guidelines from seven countries: the United States, Germany, the Netherlands, Oman, Thailand, Uruguay, and India. The study reveals significant differences in the greenhouse gas emissions (GHGE) associated with food-based dietary guidelines (FBDG) across these nations. The US guidelines had the highest carbon footprint, primarily due to high recommendations for dairy and animal-based protein, while India's guidelines had the lowest carbon footprint due to a focus on plant-based foods. The research highlights the importance of integrating sustainability into dietary guidelines to reduce environmental impacts.
