The paper, "Association between diet quality and food waste in Canadian families: a cross-sectional study," investigates how diet quality correlates with food waste in 85 Canadian families using waste audits. It finds that higher quality diets in parents, as measured by the Healthy Eating Index-2015, are associated with increased fruit and vegetable waste, both avoidable and unavoidable. Children's diet quality showed similar trends but was not significantly related to food waste. The research suggests that health-conscious households may buy more produce, but inadequate storage or meal planning leads to waste. The study calls for strategies to reduce waste while improving diet quality.
