Nutrition On My Plate – Harnessing the Power of Nutrition in Heirloom Foods

Public-private collaborations have the potential to drive innovative solutions, forge impactful partnerships, and promote best practices essential for effecting the transformation of food systems . Nutrition on My Plate, the April-May 2025 campaign of Nutrition Connect in collaboration with key stakeholders, aims to champion healthier, more sustainable, and culturally significant food choices.

 

Today’s food landscape often favors that are often times ultra-processed, calorie-rich yet nutrient-poor, resulting in a growing double burden of malnutrition—rising obesity rates coexisting with persistent micronutrient deficiencies. As of 2022, one in eight people worldwide faced obesity, underscoring the critical need to transform our food systems and dietary habits.


Heirloom foods—traditional varieties of plants, grains, etc. passed down through generations, cultivated naturally without modification, and often uniquely adapted to local environments—offer a promising, and healthier alternative. However, despite their stark benefits, heirloom foods remain underappreciated and underutilized owing to limited consumer awareness, fragmented supply chains, and unclear information regarding their nutritional advantages.By highlighting their nutritional benefits, cultural significance, and distinct value chain dynamics, this campaign seeks to drive meaningful change toward healthier food choices, sustainable practices, and supportive policy frameworks.

 

"Nutrition on My Plate" seeks to address these challenges by highlighting the farm-to-fork journey of heirloom foods. By engaging community influencers, consumers, chefs, entrepreneurs and policymakers, the campaign aims to elevate awareness, appreciation for nutritious heirloom varieties of foods.
