Summary:

This report assesses the extent of urban food waste (FW) in Colombo, Sri Lanka, focusing on waste generated at different levels of the food supply chain, including wholesale, retail, food services, and households. It quantifies food waste to support the development of strategies and policies for waste prevention and reduction. The study reveals that 55% of the total solid waste collected in the area consists of food waste, with significant contributions from municipal councils. Most food waste ends up in landfills due to inadequate recovery, redistribution, or composting. The report highlights challenges in food waste redistribution, such as lack of legal frameworks and infrastructure for cold storage, as well as the informal nature of using former foodstuffs for animal feed. It emphasizes the need for formalized waste management strategies and improved coordination between government and private entities.
