Number of People Eating Biofortified Foods On-Farm and From Markets (Off-Farm)

This report by HarvestPlus estimates the number of people consuming biofortified foods in 13 countries across Africa and Asia. It uses a modeling approach based on crop-specific yield data and per capita intake to assess on-farm and off-farm consumption. The results indicate that in 2023, over 227 million people accessed biofortified foods from markets, while more than 103 million consumed biofortified crops grown on their farms, reaching a total of 330 million people. The study highlights the role of biofortified foods in enhancing nutrition security and calls for continued investment in their scale-up.
