This article assesses global iodine fortification programs, tracking the progress of salt iodization efforts across 194 countries. In 2020, 124 countries had mandatory salt iodization laws, and 88% of the global population consumed iodized salt. However, 21 countries remain iodine-deficient, while 13 experience excessive iodine intake.
The study highlights the durability of iodine programs even in crisis situations, such as in Afghanistan and Yemen. Despite progress, equity in iodine coverage within countries remains a concern. Continued investment is necessary to sustain global iodine sufficiency and address remaining deficiencies.
