This study introduces the Geriatric Nutritional Risk Index (GNRI) as a tool to assess malnutrition-related morbidity and mortality risks in elderly patients.

Key findings:

GNRI is a reliable predictor of morbidity and mortality in hospitalized elderly patients.
Patients with GNRI < 82 have a 29-times higher risk of mortality and 4.4-times higher risk of complications.
GNRI is more accurate than BMI and weight-based assessments for elderly individuals.
Routine use of GNRI in hospitals is recommended to improve patient outcomes.
The study suggests that GNRI should be systematically recorded upon hospital admission to identify high-risk elderly patients.
