The Afikepo Nutrition Programme, funded by the European Union and implemented by FAO and UNICEF, aimed to improve food security and maternal-child nutrition in Malawi through nutrition-sensitive agriculture and governance interventions. The project ran from 2017 to 2023 and focused on two key pillars:
1. Agriculture for nutrition security – Promoted diversified food production, biofortified crops, and livestock ownership to improve dietary diversity.
2. Governance and capacity building – Strengthened nutrition governance structures, enhanced community capacity, and supported policy integration.
• Key Achievements:
• Increased awareness and consumption of biofortified crops.
• Strengthened community-based nutrition interventions.
• Improved dietary diversity among women and children.
• Challenges:
• Limited livestock success due to high mortality rates.
• Sustainability concerns tied to funding and volunteer engagement.
• Need for stronger gender inclusion strategies.
The report recommends developing a clear exit strategy, improving project sustainability, and addressing food consumption gaps for long-term impact.
