This study by Sunil Sazawal and colleagues investigates the impact of high zinc biofortified wheat on zinc status and morbidity among preschool children and non-pregnant, non-lactating women of childbearing age (WCBA) in India. Over 6000 participants were enrolled in this six-month randomized controlled trial, receiving either high zinc biofortified wheat or low zinc wheat. While the marginal difference in zinc content between the two groups did not significantly impact zinc status, participants in the high zinc group experienced a notable reduction in days with pneumonia, vomiting, and fever, particularly among children.
