About the Eat Right Youth Hackathon

The Eat Right Youth Hackathon Uttarakhand -2026, is a state-wide competition designed to empower young people to drive change towards a healthier and more sustainable food ecosystem. Initiated by Nutrition Connect (GAIN Global) and the Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition- GAIN (India), in collaboration with the Food and Drug Administration, Uttarakhand (Department of Medical Health and Family Welfare, Uttarakhand) in support with Higher Education (Government of Uttarakhand), the initiative invites youth innovators to develop practical and impactful solutions in the areas of nutrition, food safety, and sustainability.

This first-of-its-kind initiative in India aims to build awareness and drive action around the Eat Right Movement, promoted by the Government of India through the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI). The movement promotes safe, nutritious, and sustainable diets for all. The initiative seeks to inspire a new generation of youth to become ambassadors of healthier food environments, embodying the vision of “Sahi Bhojan, Behtar Jeevan” (Right Food, Better Life).

The Eat Right India movement is a public health initiative centered on three key pillars: Eat Safe, Eat Healthy, and Eat Sustainable. Aligned with this national vision, the Eat Right Youth Hackathon Uttarakhand 2026 is a landmark initiative designed to provide a platform for young innovators to ideate and scale solutions. The hackathon is structured around the three pillars detailed below:

Pillar 1 - Eat Safe i.e. pertaining to hygiene, safe storage, reducing contamination and adulteration, and improving food handling

Pillar 2 - Eat Healthy i.e. pertaining to diet diversity, reducing salt, sugar and saturated fats, protein adequacy, and fortified staples to address micronutrient gaps and addressing obesity.

Pillar 3 - Eat Sustainable i.e. pertaining to promoting local and seasonal foods, reducing food waste, encouraging eco-friendly packaging, and strengthening sustainable food systems.

Uttarakhand - The Land of Opportunity

Uttarakhand is a young and vibrant state, full of energy, awareness, and high literacy. With a large youth population and a progressive mindset, the state holds immense potential for improving food habits, dietary practices, and overall health conditions. The educated and innovative youth of Uttarakhand can lead transformative initiatives that promote healthy eating, nutrition awareness, and sustainable lifestyles. Through modern education, technological innovation, and community participation, Uttarakhand can emerge as a model state for building a healthier and more nutritionally aware society, a land where youth energy drives healthy change.

Why This Matters

Over 55.6% of India’s population cannot afford a healthy diet, and the burden of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) like diabetes, cancer, and heart disease is rising rapidly. In Uttarakhand, NCDs account for 67.9% of Disability-Adjusted Life Years (DALYs), highlighting the urgent need for preventive action through better nutrition and food choices.

India’s youth, over 37 crore people (27% of population), represent a powerful force for transformation. By engaging their creativity, energy, and ideas, the Hackathon harnesses the potential of youth as drivers of behavior change and leaders of healthier lifestyles.
