The global rise in demand for aquatic food has created sustainability challenges in fisheries and aquaculture, particularly in the Global South, where overfishing, weak regulations, and climate change exacerbate environmental threats. In response, the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries (MOF) of the Republic of Korea partnered with FAO to enhance sustainable fisheries and aquaculture through the Korea FAO Sustainable and Innovative Fisheries and Aquaculture Programme (KOFAP). The project supported national fisheries administrations, fishers, and industry stakeholders by promoting responsible fisheries management, conservation efforts, and aquaculture development. Key activities included secondees from MOF working with FAO, policy support, mariculture projects in Zanzibar, and value chain initiatives in Kiribati and Sri Lanka.
