This research study explores the relationship between diet cost and nutritional quality in Guadeloupe and Martinique, where food prices are 30% higher than in mainland France. Using diet optimization modeling, the study identifies dietary shifts that enhance nutrition while lowering costs. The findings suggest that reducing intake of refined cereals, meat, fish, and sweetened beverages while increasing plant-based foods, dairy, and eggs improves nutritional adequacy. The study highlights policy opportunities to make healthy diets more accessible to socioeconomically disadvantaged populations.
