The article investigates the prevalence of vitamin D deficiency among socio-economically deprived children under five years old in Kabul, Afghanistan. Conducted in January 2005, the study analyzed plasma 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] concentrations in 107 children from the Chindawal district. The findings revealed a median concentration of 5 ng/mL, with 73% of children having levels below 8 ng/mL, indicating severe deficiency.

Factors contributing to this deficiency include limited sun exposure due to cultural practices, high-walled courtyards, and air pollution. The study highlights the urgent need for targeted interventions to prevent rickets and other health complications related to vitamin D deficiency.
