This systematic review and meta-analysis compare total parenteral nutrition (TPN) and enteral nutrition (TEN) in patients with acute pancreatitis, assessing their impact on prognosis and treatment outcomes.
Key findings:
TEN is associated with lower infection rates (odds ratio: 0.25, P=0.003) compared to TPN.
Mortality rates are significantly lower in patients receiving TEN (OR = 0.59, P=0.03).
Multiple organ failure rates show no significant difference between the two methods.
Hospital stay duration is shorter with TEN (mean difference = -4.18 days, P<0.001).
Despite the benefits of TEN, attention must be given to potential complications during implementation.
This study reinforces the importance of enteral nutrition as a preferred feeding method in acute pancreatitis to enhance patient outcomes.
