The article evaluates the Geriatric Nutritional Risk Index (GNRI) as a predictor of postoperative delirium (POD) in elderly cardiac surgery patients. The study analyzed 4,286 patients, finding that patients with lower GNRI scores had a significantly higher risk of developing POD (OR: 1.83, 95% CI: 1.42–2.34, p < 0.001). The study also assessed the impact of GNRI on prediction models and found that incorporating GNRI improved predictive accuracy, particularly in models including other risk factors.
The study concludes that low GNRI is strongly associated with an increased risk of POD, suggesting that preoperative nutritional assessment should be considered in elderly cardiac surgery patients to improve outcomes. However, the findings need validation in multi-center studies.
