This document discusses Belgium’s development and use of the Food Safety Barometer, a science-based tool with 30 indicators that measure progress in food safety, identify priorities for public authorities, and communicate concerns to stakeholders. The system, developed by the Belgian Federal Agency for the Safety of the Food Chain (FASFC) in collaboration with an independent Scientific Committee, follows a Pressure-State-Response framework. This approach evaluates food safety status, influencing factors, and actions taken to maintain standards. The barometer provides yearly food safety assessments using measurable, reliable, and durable indicators covering the entire food chain from farm to fork. The initiative has helped standardize food safety measurements and improve transparency in food control across Belgium.
