This meta-analysis examines the prevalence of vitamin D deficiency (hypovitaminosis D) among children and adolescents across South Asia. Based on 41 studies with 18,233 participants, the study finds an overall deficiency rate of 61%. Afghanistan has the highest prevalence (96.2%), followed by Pakistan (94%) and India (64%).
The findings highlight vitamin D deficiency as a significant public health concern in the region, with implications for bone health, immunity, and chronic disease risk. The study calls for policy measures, including vitamin D supplementation, fortification, and increased sun exposure.
