The PENGUIN study protocol outlines a randomized controlled trial to assess the impact of a prebiotic fiber supplement on gut microbiome health and surgical outcomes in patients with prosthetic joint infection (PJI) undergoing two-stage revision surgery. The trial will analyze gut microbiome profiles and inflammation markers in 80 patients receiving resistant starch versus a placebo. Findings from this study could inform preoperative dietary interventions to reduce infection recurrence and improve joint replacement outcomes.
