This Global Burden of Disease (GBD) study assesses the impact of excess body weight (EBW) on mortality and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) from 1990 to 2019. The analysis, covering 204 countries, reveals that 5 million deaths and 160.3 million DALYs were attributable to EBW in 2019. The study finds regional variations, with Southeast Asia and South Asia experiencing the highest disease burden. While age-standardized DALY rates increased by 18% over the period, mortality rates remained relatively unchanged, indicating a persistent public health challenge. The study underscores the need for targeted obesity prevention and intervention strategies.
