FAO activated anticipatory action in Madagascar to prevent a locust crisis in 2021–2022 that threatened food security across six regions. The campaign, supported by SFERA-AA and the German government, involved locust surveillance, spraying, training on GPS and pesticide handling, and use of helicopters for hard-to-reach areas. Thanks to early action, crop damage was prevented, particularly in the Grand Sud region. The project strengthened government capacity and created new monitoring systems to manage future threats effectively.
