This qualitative study investigates the empowerment of women through their roles as Nutrition Friends (Poshan Sakhis) in the Swabhimaan program in India. Conducted across Bihar, Odisha, and Chhattisgarh, the research used in-depth interviews to explore how community-based involvement impacted self-perception, decision-making, and societal roles. Thematic analysis revealed barriers at personal and community levels, and strategies used by women to overcome these challenges.
Participants reported improved self-confidence, recognition in their communities, and enhanced knowledge about health and nutrition. They acted as change-makers, promoting healthier behaviors, addressing malnutrition, and strengthening service delivery. The study concludes that integrating women from local collectives into health initiatives boosts program impact while fostering women's empowerment. This model contributes meaningfully to achieving Sustainable Development Goals related to gender and nutrition.
