This factsheet consolidates findings from five SMART surveys conducted across selected blocks in Jharkhand, Odisha, Uttar Pradesh, and Madhya Pradesh to assess acute malnutrition, food security, and WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) indicators. The surveys aimed to generate localized data critical for planning Comprehensive Community-based Management of Severe Acute Malnutrition (CSAM) programmes. The data highlight high rates of wasting, underweight, and stunting among children under five, along with food insecurity and poor sanitation conditions in the surveyed areas.
The survey methodology included anthropometric measurements, IYCF practices, maternal nutrition, and household-level indicators on food security and hygiene. Results were used for advocacy with state governments to scale up CSAM interventions. The brief argues for integrating SMART data into policy design for improved programme targeting, coverage, and efficiency using existing government systems.
