The article highlights the growing challenge of food import dependence in the Solomon Islands since 2001, particularly among urban populations. Despite policies aimed at import substitution, unhealthy food imports such as fatty meats and sugary snacks have increased significantly compared to healthy food imports. The article outlines three key avenues to strengthen existing policies: incentivizing urban households to grow food crops, improving transport and storage for local foods, and stimulating consumer demand for local products.
