The article presents the first global assessment of black soils, recognized for their rich organic matter, high fertility, and crucial role in food production and climate regulation. It introduces the Global Black Soil Distribution Map (GBSmap) and identifies the major ecosystems where black soils are found, including grasslands, wetlands, and forested regions. The report documents key threats such as soil organic carbon loss, erosion, and nutrient depletion, emphasizing the urgency of adopting sustainable management practices. Through the work of the International Network of Black Soils, FAO advocates for the protection, restoration, and sustainable use of these vital soils to secure ecosystem services, food security, and climate resilience.
