This prospective cohort study investigated the link between specific breakfast cereal types and mortality risks among 186,168 UK Biobank participants. Over a 13.4-year median follow-up, 9402 deaths occurred. Moderate intake of muesli, bran cereal, and porridge was associated with reduced all-cause mortality. Muesli and bran cereals were also linked to lower risks of cardiovascular disease (CVD) and cancer-related deaths. In contrast, plain cereal consumption was associated with higher CVD mortality, while sweetened cereals were associated with higher cancer mortality. Adding dried fruits and milk further reduced all-cause and cause-specific mortality risks. The study supports the inclusion of certain breakfast cereals as part of a balanced diet while cautioning against refined and sweetened cereal types.
