Our food is killing too many of us

Opinion piece in the New York Times highlights how poor diets in the US are fueling high cost of health care, and what can be done about it.

Dariush Mozaffarian (Dean of the Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy at Tufts University) and Dan Glickman (US Secretary of Agriculture, 1995 to 2001) discuss the impact of poor diets in the US. They highlight examples of what has worked well (e.g. nutrition standards for school meals), and put forward options for future action for the public sector (e.g. taxes on sugar sweetened beverages, subsidies for fruits and vegetables), the private sector (e.g. changing shareholder criteria) and public private partnerships (e.g. R&D).
