Investing in the future: A united call to action on vitamin and mineral deficiencies

This is a collaborative report by international development agencies looking at the human and economic costs of vitamin and mineral deficiencies and what can be done to eliminate them. The report is divided into three parts:

  • The importance of essential vitamins and minerals to health: Vitamin A, Iodine, Iron, Zinc, Folate.
  • The costs of deficiencies in these essential vitamin and minerals: Lives lost, lives impaired, losses in productivity, and impact on health systems.
  • Investments in human capital and the role of partnerships.

Page 15 addresses the vital role of partnerships in food fortification. As other studies have shown, investments in vitamin and mineral deficiencies are low cost and high return. This report is global in scope and gives a list of priority actions for public-private engagement:

  • Vitamin A supplementation
  • Salt iodisation
  • Food fortification
  • Multiple micronutrient supplements for children
  • Supplements for women of child-bearing Age
  • Zinc supplementation for diarrhoea management
