Chapter 7 of the FAO’s 2013 State of Food and Agriculture: Food Systems for Better Nutrition, provides a helpful overview of the challenges and opportunities to improving supply chains for better nutrition, and how investment from both public and private actors could help improve supply chain efficiency. For example, smallholder producers’ linkages to markets are often limited due to disruptions along the value chain (storage, transport, distribution) but public-private investments in transport, information communication technologies, and infrastructure could minimise disruptions and help reduce risk for smallholders. This chapter also covers options for improving overall value chain efficiency that would lead to more affordable and diverse diets, including actions to reduce post-harvest losses and options for fortifying and reformulating foods for enhanced nutrition.
