Sweets and puddings ‘get sweeter’ despite sugar reduction plan

"A new report from Public Health England (PHE) found inadequate progress is being made on a voluntary target for the food industry to reduce 20% of sugar from key food categories by the end of 2020."

The new PHE study, Sugar reduction: progress between 2015 and 2018, found that food retailers and manufacturers have only reduced sugar by 2.9% overall since 2015. The Soft Drinks Industry Levy data, however, shows a "28.8% reduction per 100ml in retailer own-brand and manufacturer-branded products." These findings have important implications for how public and private sectors work together to make changes throughout the food system that can help improve nutrition.
